What is the general attitude towards pot (marijuana) in cz -
Well, I certainly would never see you again if I would find that you smoke. This is my opinion and opinion of people I associate with. I cannot imagine, that you would survive in company of any decent people.
my impression is that mainly young generation is not under strong influence of prejudices on this. some research says about 50% of secondary school students have tried to smoke a joint, and - again, it is my impression - generally the public seems to be tolerant about that.
however, smoking dope is not legal, and you won't be allowed to smoke in public places (pubs and so).
maybe my friends are not decent enough, but most of them believes that in privacy one can do whatever he/she feels like, until it brings harm to anyone else.
as for myself, however never tried (and never actually smoked a cigarette either), i do not mind my company to do so. in other words, i judge people by other means than this.
Thanks for the input -
for some people it definitely does. however, this is an issue one can hardly generalize to all population.
one of the rather significant groups sharing magan's point of view are, for example, politics from Christian-Democratic Party (KDU-CSL is the czech abbr.). However, it is not that clear whether all its voters support it. (Well I tend to believe they do.)
in every society you can find liberal and conservative opinions; i can hardly compare due to lack of personal experience but it seems to me the general public opinion (in CZR) is not as hysterical about this as in some other countries.
Well I noticed the people who smoke pot in Prague are 1) foreigners of dubious company, 2) good-for-nothing derelict youths perhaps contaminated by the former.
Most people in the CZ do not care. I have not found one person who said they wouldn't hang out with me because I smoke.
You are aloud to have a small amount on you legally, but the law doesn't specify what a small amount is, so it is better not to show anyone. Many of my friends don't smoke and they don't mind that I do (I don't drink, so it balances out). Many people don't mind though. If I go to a place a lot and know the owner, I will ask if I can smoke pot inside, and usually it is a yes, along with a "keep it on the down low". Other times me and my Czech friends simply step outside the pub and smoke a joint by the door. It is nice.
And, I grow at home, and my boyfriend is a Czech police officer and he doesn't care one way or another... And even says that one day he might smoke with me! We will see
And yes, there are a lot of loser smokers out there. But these are the ones that people know smoke and who are obvious about it. There are also a lot of very successful smokers who are very nice.
With my poor English I must read it allowed to understand it.
I see...... The way I read it, you imply that if a police officer picks you up for possesion he is a jerk? Even if its illegal? Or do you think you are above the law?
Just a conversation point.
As for you rhenium3, you naughty girl, your boyfriend being a police officer and allowing it in his presence doesn't surprise me. Probably not for the reasons you think though........
There are also a lot of very successful smokers who are very nice. There are more who are non smokers and are also very nice.
When I was in the Czech Republic in 1998, the impression I got from my cousins was that there were bigger problems, such as heroin use, and that it would be a waste of the state's time and money to prosecute recreational users of pot and those in possession of small amounts of marijuana.
My mom and I were sitting in a parkette across from the Rudolfinum around noon on a nice and sunny May day when the area was fairly busy. Two youths sat down about two meters from us and began using heroin right there in the open. It was only then that we noticed several used syringes discarded right near where we were sitting. Needless to say, we didn't stick (no pun intended) around.
Also, my aunt's friends were growing a couple marijuana plants in their garden for their own use and although they weren't advertising the fact, they also weren't worried about being "caught" and prosecuted.
Well, my two cents on this is that I found marijuana to be completely tolerated. A number of popular bars in Olomouc where I was living in for six months actively allowed people to smoke dope on the premises. One even had a special deal: if you bought a certain number of beers, you were given a pack of papers so you could make a joint using the hash that was in a bowl on the bar counter. In fact, quite a few places did this or something along the same lines. So from my experience, it is tolerated to a large extent.
There is an old Czech saying:
"Tell me who your friends are, and I'll tell you who you are!"
Yes, even today you are still judged by your associations!. Like in;" birds of a feather tend to flock together".
thanks again for the input
Pot-smokers can well do what they please in their homes.
The problem with smokers, and pot smokers in particular, is that they poison the air of the pubs where they indulge in their drug. As I'm not a drug-addict, I find it extremely disturbing. The next time I'm in Prague, I'll sniff the air if I enter a pub, and will flee immediately if I can detect the drug.
yeah, smoky bars and restaurants are not good for anyone
Your last post is somewhat inconsistent --too much smoke in your eyes? --Since you mentioned that your boyfriend is a Policeman in Prague --did you forget? -- Why ask us amateurs about pot, if you have a professional source at your fingertips. Who would know better than a Policeman about the legality of pot in CZ, and chances of being busted that your intimate friend: "The man himself"....
ha ha Viktor!
No, I don't have a Czech policeman for a boyfriend - I think you're getting me mixed up with Hilary who had posted earlier...
Sorry... I guess Hilary has the answer.
