What operators do you have in UK? Using the same one should be the best option. Here we have T-Mobile, gonnabe Vodafone called Oskar and gonnabe Telefonica called Eurotel. Or you can use some kind of IP telephony - there is a popular program called Skype which I find quite interesting.

If you use Skype to call from anywhere to any Czech mobile, it is GBP 0.123 (5.428 Kč) and GBP 0.016 (0.701 Kč) to a fixed line. If you get your girlfriend to use Skype as well, it's free. The rates are always rounded up to the next minute and if paying from inside the EU, +15% VAT is added. Still cheaper than calling from a regular phone I think.
