Climate conditions in August

    Hi,
I'm planning a trip to Czech Republic for 15 days in August and I've checked some climate charts about average temperatures and rainfall at that time of the year. I know that each year can be a surprise but generally, how's the weather there in August? Is it different in the east part of the country and in the west? I'm visiting different parts of the country, from Karlovy Vary to Olomouc, and since it is a 15-days stay I need to take enough clothes, but not too much, so this question about the climate could really be helpful.

And what about sunlight? I'm from a very sunny country and here we get sun until around 7 pm at August, is it the same there? Or should I expect nightfall a little sooner?

If anyone could say something about this it would really help me with my plans. Thanks.

Wow, 7 p.m. seems very early for sunset in August. In Michigan, USA, the sun sets 9:00 p.m. in August.

You can find rather detailed information about climate (mean temperature, precipitations, sunshine etc.) on http://www.chmi.cz/meteo/ok/infklime.html
In my opinion the weather in August is rather stable, warm (about 22 C), with occassional rain, the day is starting to shorten, but consider the sommer time (+1 hour).
The differencies are not between east and west but between cities and country, between lower and higher levels (it is cooler in the mountains).

Time of sunset depends only on time of year and the geographic latitude of the location.

Latitude of Michigan state is from 41°41'N to 47°30'N.
    Latitude of Prague is 50°05'N

For August, times of Czech sunset are aproximately:

    01/08 - 19:42
    14/08 - 19:21
    31/08 - 18:47

Thank you for the link, Karel, it has most of the information I have been searching for. Here in Portugal the temperature is very different from south to north and east to west, and we're a small country, so I thought that there were significant differences in Czech Republic too.

About the sunset (a bit offtopic, sorry, but it came to subject), here in July we have very large and sunny days, the sun sets around 9 pm, but in August the days start to shorten and in the middle of the month it sets earlier, not after 7:30 pm (summer time).

I asked about sunset because I have daily trips to some places around Prague and I wanted to know how late could I stay there before the night falls.
So thanks eso, it is very helpful.

    N.B.
It is true for the local solar time which is based on the idea that the sun reaches its highest point at 12 o'clock. The zone time is NOT suitable for such comparisons since the sun does not culminate at 12 o'clock of the zonal time in every location.

Plus: In the EU the time is managed by Brussels and not by the celestial bodies.

I understand that, but he said he is from a place where the sun sets late. I was merely pointing out that it's not late from my point of view. :)

There is a deep night in Europe when the sun is setting in Michigan.

Anyway the latitude of Portugal (continental, without the Azores and Madeira) is cca 37°N-42°N. So Porto and Detroit must have similar sun conditions. The discrepancy is mainly due to the fact that the local zone time has rather an administrative character and certainly has a different shift to the local solar time in Portugal and Michigan.

I have found different values (August 14th):

    Prague - 20:26 CEST
    Olomouc - 20:14 CEST

CEST = Central European Summer Time (UTC+2)

It is a nice example that the sunset time depends on the longitude, too.

In any case, Lilac, the summer day is considerably longer in the Czechlands than in Portugal.

    Hi,

I found this website that has graphic information about sunrise, sunset, dawn and dusk times of places all over the world:
    http://www.gaisma.com/en/dir/001-continent.html

    This one is for Lisbon:
    http://www.gaisma.com/en/location/lisbon.html

and this one is for Prague:
    http://www.gaisma.com/en/location/prague.html

The graphic doesn't give exact time, but I think we can say that, for middle August, in Prague the sun rises at about 5:40 am and it sets at 20:30. As for Lisbon, it rises at 6:40 am and it sets as 20:30 too. So according to this, In Prague there is one more hour of sunlight than in Lisbon at this time of the year, but there isn't much difference about the time of sunset.
The differences between the values that have been discussed here, I guess, are related to the time. Portugal has CET and Czech Republic is CET+1. Besides that, we have to consider summer time, that explains the reason why I mentioned 7:30 pm for the sunset here, instead of 8:30 pm.

So, at the end of this, I'm glad I can make my plans for the one-day trips until late :D

Of course, in Portugal there's oceanic climate. In the CR there's continental climate which is more stable (and warmer and drier).

Only in north-western part of the CR there's a weak (but significant) influence of ocean resulting into more frequent precipitation.

Exact times for reference point 50°N 15°E (Prague - 50°05′N 14°25′E) in CET. Only the length is invariant in change of longitude and time zone, and therefor useful for comparison of climate in different locations.

Although we have oceanic climate I think the weather here is warmer than in Czech Republic, maybe because of the Mediterranean. Besides that, it rarely rains between May and September, especially from June to August (but we have rainy winters).

A city doesn't represent a country, but just to have an idea:
