I just came across this board and wanted to introduce myself.

Together with an Irish friend I am moving to Prague for six month starting June 1st.

We have a small software design company and since we work a lot online it does not matter that much where in Europe we are as long as there are good connections.

I'm interested in culture in most forms and shapes and would like to experience as much of Prague and Czech Republic as I can during my stay.

I will bring tourist books and check out the attractions but would also love to see the hidden beauties of Prague, so...

    * Which part of the city would you go to to get lost a Sunday afternoon without having a set agenda?
    * Were would you go to see local bands (folk, rock, jazz) play?
    * What local events and festivals do you go to over a year?

    I can't wait to get there! :D

I understood something to the effect that you are well, and something about the Danish language. I wish I spoke more Danish--my Dad speaks it, and my Grandpa spoke it. I'm 4th generation American on my Danish side, but I only know a few phrases. :(

You are right about your translation it was "It's going well - and nice Danish [you wrote]". The Danish language is quite difficult to master because we have just as many exceptions as we have rules. Plus we have some funky words. Try saying "Rødgrød med fløde" - it's not easy for Americans: http://blip.tv/file/224991

I'm looking forward to wrestle with the Czech lingo :)

Actually, my Dad used to say that to us kids all the time, along with sending us to bed with (and I'm probably going to butcher the spelling here) "So godt."

Welcome to the fora and enjoy your stay in Prague :)
    1) Classical tour: Mala Strana (Little Quarter). Carefully avoid the main tourist routes like Nerudova Street or Tržiště. Sink yourself into any narrow winding alleys that still have the special flavour of the past centuries. Don´t forget to look into inner yards whenever possible - they ARE beautiful. Definitely don´t forget Nový svět. And don´t omit Vrtbovska garden. :D

    2) Adventurous tour: Take tram 5 or 9 from Hlavni nádraží in direction to Žižkov. Get off at Lipanská, go down the stairs and enjoy rambling in the most specific Prague quarter that used proudly call itself Free State of Žižkov. Steep streets, stairs, passageways. The highest density of pubs (and night clubs) in square kilometer. Local color represented by bunches of young lads enjoying their boxing clubs. Plenty of graffiti and street art. Don´t skip the pub U vystřelenýho voka (At the eye shot off).

    3) Romantic tour: Take tram 20 or 26 from metro A, Hradčanská. Get off at the terminus, Divoká Šárka. Pass the monstrous McDonald (preferably with closed eyes) and enjoy romantic rocky valley. Just beware of the wild woman who gave name to this place. The tale of Wild Sarka and her admirer Ctirad can be found at http://www.radio.cz/en/article/11889.

U Malého Glena - mostly jazz (Malá Strana, Karmelitská ulice). http://www.malyglen.cz
Balbínova poetická hospůdka - folk, irish music. http://www.balbinka.cz
    Klub Roxy http://klub.roxy.cz

    Rock for People http://www.rockforpeople.cz/index2.php

Since you're going to be there for six months, you also should try some day trips outside of Prague. There are some wonderful castles, architecture, and natural beauty all around the area. Just to name a few:

    Karlštejn
    Český ráj
    Telč
    Český Krumlov
    Hluboká
    Kutná Hora
    Karlovy Vary

Most of these, you should be able to do in a day, depending on the bus/train schedules on the day you choose to go. Some, however, you may want to spend longer, since there is so much to see.

@Sova and Hanka7: Thank you very much!! This looks like some very good tips - I'll try them out.

Sorry for the late reply - but for some reason I'm not getting emails when people comment my posts??
