Hi I have a question about pet names for family. When learning the vocative, you find that according to the ending of the name, there will be a particular vowel change, eg Jana would become Jano etc etc. Now I find for example, that Honza can also become Honzi. Can anyone explain this please? Many thanks Ani
Probably it is a result of the folk creativity (lidová tvořivost) rather than a grammatical rule. You can also hear Pavlí, Vládí, etc. (with the long í at the end) instead of Pavle, Vláďo,... It seems that it is a shortened form of Pavlíku (Pavlíčku), etc. You can also hear Jani, Dani, Marti, Vlasti, Ani, etc. (with the short i, the previous consonant is palatalized) as a shortened form of Janičko, etc.
Thanks for your explanation My Czech friends call me Ani and it only just occurred to me that here again is the 'i' ending Thanks again.
