hello I'm shortly going to visit Czech Republik. I'd like to know whether it is very common for women to have shaved legs. Or else: How do people react if they see a foreigner with non-shaved ones? thanks to everybody for answering
thank you Karel. but tell me: how do people react if a foreigner does not comply? Is it conceived as somehow rude? regards
They will stare at you. If you`d asked me this question 10 years ago, I would`ve said, you still see some walking tragedies out there, but now it`s part of the social etiquette. When I attended some dance classes (that takes me back), there was a girl so hairy that her stockings seemed as if put on sheep. We laughed at her even then. I`ve never heard anyone make some cutting remarks against Czech girls as being hairy (never had one, but of course saw some), but heard some Americans say that Czechs stink. The Czech tradition and conviction was that every man had to stink otherwise he wasn`t a man, but this troglodytic argument has gone. Male cyclists also shave their legs and hands, which attracts lots of attention as well, but there`re other reasons for it than comply with the social etiquette and a high level of civilazation. Some girls demand that their boyfriends be shaven as well. Karel
Personally, I don't think anyone would care less if your legs were shaved or not. Yes, it's common now among women, but I still see a fair amount of unshaved legs and pits as I go about town... I think Karel is grossly exaggerating, personally..."stare at you"? Oh please. They don't even do that in the States.
... i think karel is right. I have NEVER seen a girl in Prague or anywhere else in the CR with unshaven legs.
