se or si exercise help

    I am going through a section in which I have to insert Se or SI if possible.

    I came across a very short sentence but I am having trouble understaning whether to use "se" or "s" or not at all.

    Umí ____dobře vyprávět.


    Using si or se sounds like I would be telling myself or narrating to myself. If I don't use si or se it seems like : "I know how to narrate well".

    Also just to sum up my understanding of "umět" a couple of example sentences would be great.

    In this case, right choice is let it empty.

    Meaning:
    (on/ona/oni) Umí dobře vyprávět. - He/she knows, how to narrate well. / They know, how to narrate well.

    "Umí si dobře vyprávět" teoretically means "He knows, how to narrate to himself.", but it seems strange.

    já umím
    ty umíš
    on/ona/ono umí

    my umíme
    vy umíte
    oni/ony/ona umí

    (já) Umím plavat - I can swim.
    (he) Umí dobře svou práci - He does his job well.
    Všichni umí anglicky - They all can speak English.

    Generally speaking, the usage of "si", "se" and prefixes plays in Czech language similar role as play phrasal verbs in English. They are used to modify the meaning of the base verb.


    In the following sentences the "se" or "si" does not belong to the verb "umět", but to the other verbs.

    Umí dobře vyprávět.
    Umí stát dlouho na jedné noze.

    Umí si uvařit oběd. (uvařit si)
    Umí si poručit. (poručit si)

    Umí se hezky usmát. (usmát se)
    Uměl se narodit. (narodit se)

    Similarly to the phrasal verbs you can make long lists of different meanings from one base verb, e.g.

    dělat
    dělat si (starosti)
    prodělat (nemoc)
    udělat
    udělat si (večeři)
    udělat se (hezkým)
    vydělat (peníze)
    vydělat si (peníze)
    vydělat se (na ulici), colloq.
    zadělat (těsto)
    zadělat si (na malér), colloq.
    etc. etc. :)

    In the Czech distionary you can usually find a list of prefixes used with the verb (and also if "si" or "se" can be used with the verb).
    With the verb "dělat", the list in the "Vocabulary of literary Czech" contains the following:

    do-
    do- se
    na-
    na- se
    ob-
    od-
    po-
    po- se
    pře-
    při-
    roz-
    s-
    u-
    u- se
    vy- (přivy- si)
    z-
    z- se
    za-
    prodělati
    vzdělati

    Back to your example:

    Umí _ dobře vyprávět.

    vyprávět někomu o něčem = tell sb. about st.
    vyprávět si (only in plural):
    vyprávět si pohádky (tell stories among members of a group)
    vyprávět se - can't be used
