I'm having trouble understanding the difference (in meaning) that the suffix -hle makes in, for example, tenhle as opposed to ten and tamhle/tam. Is there an easy way to explain this? Děkuju!

Tenhle, tuhle... are colloquial terms and put some stress on the pronoun ten, tu etc. The suffix "hle" comes from the verb "hledět" and means "look, here", i.e. somebody or something we can see.
